Faile

Faile is a Brooklyn-based design collective founded by Patrick McNeil, Patrick Miller, and Aiko Nakagawa . They've been plastering the streets of U.S. and European cities with their silkscreened work for the better part of a decade, and I really like their stylistic choices and composition.

The group works with a variety of platforms for their art, including canvas, outdoor image transfers, and plywood. The comic book style of illustration is what I gravitated towards as a youngster, and I enjoy its pervasive use in Faile's work. Check out the online store at their website for prints and whatnot.

Publishing Industry to Cut Carbon Emissions 20 Percent by 2020, 80 Percent by 2050

I used to work in the publishing industry, and while it was a super awesome place to work (as my homeboy Thomas Jefferson once said "I cannot live without books"), I was always bummed by the amount of waste we created every day. For example, we would have a pdf file of a first draft of a manuscript, and instead of e-mailing that pdf file around, my boss would have me print out a separate copy for each person who needed it (single sides, anywhere in between 100 and 300 pages).

Even worse, we didn't even have accessible recycling bins. There was literally one recycling bin on each floor, and people were too busy to go to it. They would just dump piles and piles of paper in the trash every day. And this was only for the first draft - same thing would happen with successive drafts, with the promo copies, and with the preview copies we sent for around for PR. And all of this before the printing of the actual book!

There are some "good" reasons for why we had to print all these copies out instead of sending pdf files. My generation is the first generation to really get used to spending more than 30 minutes reading on a screen, and even we are still slightly uncomfortable with it. My guess is that it won't be until the next generation that people are completely committed to online or electronic books. All of the higher ups, even in the publishing industry, just can't handle reading an entire manuscript on their screen.

A perfect example of this is the Amazon Kindle. Here is this amazing device, the same size as a book, where you can buy "books" for cheaper than in their paper versions and where you can carry 50 or so "books" around at the same time and in the same amount of space as a single book would usually take. People should be buying these by the truckload! And while Kindle sales are taking off, they are doing so very slowly and mostly with the younger generation. But I digress.

The fact of the matter is that people who grew up reading physical books still like reading physical books. They are uncomfortable reading them on a computer screen. The end result of this is that the publishing industry routinely cuts down 30 MILLION trees to make into the books that we buy each year.

There is some good news though: The Book Industry Environmental Council said today that it has set goals of cutting the U.S. book industry's greenhouse gas emissions 20 percent by 2020 -- and slashing them 80 percent by 2050.

While my problem with the publishing industry has more to do with the physical waste of paper than with overall CO2 emissions, cutting down on CO2 will also mean cutting down on paper waste. According to ClimateBiz.com, "the production, acquisition and use of paper are responsible for 65 percent of the U.S. book industry's carbon footprint. Increasing the use of recycled paper, ramping up the efficient use of all paper products, reducing returns and diverting books from landfills are among the steps that companies can take to reach the emissions goals."

It may not be perfect, but until we help out by doing all our reading electronically (something I admit I do not do, I LOVE my dog-eared paper books) it is a huge step in the right direction.

Scott Campbell: Make it Rain

I hate that expression, but Miami tattoo artist Scott Campbell's recent installation at OHWOW is incredible nonetheless.  These laser-cut stacks of $1 bills are amazing.

Ryan Giggs: PFA Player of the Year

Since the early '90's, I've been a rabid football fan (soccer, not throwball). Since that time, I have gravitated towards one team: Manchester United, because of one player: Ryan Giggs. Yesterday, Giggs, who is 34, was named the Professional Footballers' Association Player of the Year. The PFA award is voted on by the players, and while Giggs has not been a frequent starter in the Man U team this season, he is still a key component who exudes confidence, leadership, and generally makes those around him better, and the 'gong,' as it is known, is seen as a reward for that.

Over the course of his club career, played entirely with Manchester United, Giggs has been a part of 10 Premier League championships, 4 FA Cup wins, 3 League Cups, and two famous UEFA Champions' League victories. He holds club records for appearances and trophies won, and could reach the lofty heights of 800 games played tomorrow as the famous Man United face off against bitter rivals Arsenal in the Champions' League semifinals (1:30 PM central on ESPN2).

So to recap, this ultimate team player has won more trophies, made more appearances, and has spent his entire career with the same club, the greatest club in the world, the famous Man United. Congrats on the award!

Official Pentax K Images...

With all the web-leaks prior to the official announcement, I keep being bombarded by images from people's workspace revealing the latest cameras.  I know we are all eager for the next DSLR release, so much so, that it is the hottest topic over at Pentax Forums.

Some clues are intentionally blurred, some are laid in a series with prior Pentax models, and some are just hiding in corners of all places, like a jacuzzi from some fine chap's reading chair, amidst California's sunny skies.

Well, I said to myself... "Self... don't leave yourself out of the drama :)" So here goes, here are my additions to the leak pool.

"My Official K photos"

As you can see: "Pentax K" a retro-analog looking DSLR.

Rear view reveals a 2x2" LCD perfect for taking passport style pictures.

No, in all seriousness, I couldn't help but fuel the fire. I hope i didn't anger anyone. Lets just sit back and relax and wait for the new announcement. Something tells me its gonna be a whopper. In the meantime, lets get out there and shoot!

On a side-note, I apologize for not being too active over the web forums, because I have been enjoying all the precious moments with my 1 yr. old daughter.

Lately, I have been getting back into the swing of things.  Some of us photogs. are working out there, but i do get a chance to browse the forums from time to time. In 3 weeks, I will be leaving for the Mentawai Islands to shoot for Billabong Asia and will post more landscape and extreme action surfing. Stay tuned...

Here is a shot taken today (4/27/09) of my all time hero who has been revered as the "best fighter pound for pound", the champion of champions, and the pride of the Philippine Islands, Manny Pacquiao. He fights Ricky Hatton this weekend in VEGAS. GO MANNY!

Texts From Last Night

Texts From Last Night was brought to my attention by a co-worker (well technically she's an intern and I'm a contractor, so we are more like two people who sit in the same proximity in a very large office building, so whatever, tangent monster out) and is absolute genius.

The brainchild of some people who are clearly very sick, this is the holy grail for voyeuristic forays into OPB (other peoples' business (C)2009 RGD). The numbers preceding the messages are area codes, so those who submit their texts can lie anonymously about their adventures. Despite dubious authenticity, these are seriously funny. Some favorites below:

(615): yo i just woke up i feel so weird, and the absolut is still fill, so is the 30, what the fuck did we drink last night man? And will you please come out of the bathroom.
(702): Bro... we didn't even hang out last night??

(781): I just woke up surrounded in unopened snacks

(958): Ok I think I'm on a date with a hooker from Louisiana
(303): go home
(985): But it's funny

(540): is it bad that i shorted Freddie Mac immediatly after I heard about
the CFO?

(215): Stoned at DSW. SO MANY SHOES! THEY'RE FREAKING ME OUT.

(301): Very drunk. laura says hi. i can't find my pants. i think i'm in
philly, but it might be jersey somewhere

(440): I love you
(720): are you drunk
(440): yes but I def love you, we should get married
(720): But I'm Jewish
(440): embrace Jesus

(516): gavin joseph was born around 1 oclock 9lbs 12oz... over 21 inches
long
(917): Thats what she said

(970): Remember that night when i almost got you arrested? Is that funny
yet?

(212): You feel like going out tonight?
(1-212): Does a 14yr-old girl look good beat up? I'll bring the
handle

Can Algae Outperform Other Biofuels?

Here’s an article on the ever growing “algae revolution” where people stop chanting “drill baby, drill” and start chanting “grow baby, grow.” There are definitely upsides to algae, but do they outweigh the problems?

One group of people who say yes are the shrimp farmers in Gial Bend, AZ. Here, the newest algae project is not controlled by an army of scientists or funded with millions of dollars worth of government research grants. Rather, it's a desert shrimp farm changing with the times to produce biodiesel from algae, using some of the same algae that feed the shrimp.

With biodiesel prices at $4.81 a gallon, according to the U.S. Department of Energy, these shrimp farmers hope to produce it for less than $3 a gallon. With these small farms being capable of producing 5,000 gallons of biofuel per acre in two years, there is definitely something to be said.

Algae is transformed into biofuels by pressing the oil out of the algae and then adding lye, sodium and ethanol as a catalyst to make the fuel more pure. The lye, sodium and ethanol can be reused.

Biofuels made from algae have an advantage over biofuels made from soybeans, palm oil or corn because algae is not a source of food, growing algae does not use agriculturally fertile land and algae can be grown in treated wastewater.

FROM ALGAE TO FUEL

* Algae is turned into biofuel in a process called transesterification.

* Biofuels made from algae contain around 90 percent of the energy in regular diesel but produce less CO2.

* Some forms of algae consist of more than 50 percent oil.

* Many vehicles would not have to convert to run on biodiesel.

FUEL POTENTIAL

Biodiesel potential, according to a report from the University of New Hampshire :

* 7.5 billion gallons of biodiesel can be produced in an area of 780 square miles.

* Biofuels take advantage of solar energy because plants use photosynthesis to convert solar energy into fuel.

* Certain strains of algae are among the most photosynthetically efficient plants.

* 15,000 square miles of algae production could replace all the petroleum-based transportation fuels needed in the United States.

Now if I could only start selling the algae growing on my f*&#ing fishtank...

Stereographic Images of Tokyo

Using an ultra-wide fisheye lens(?), Flickr user heiwa4126 has taken some really crazy images of Tokyo and its surrounding environs. His equipment includes a Nikon D80 SLR camera and the aforementioned Sigma 8mm fisheye lens. Other than that, I don't know much about it and I'm disinclined to investigate further at this point. Just appreciate the radness and look at the pretty pictures.

Check out the rest of the images (about 100) here.

San Franciscans - How to Get a Free Bike Rack

When the bike improvement injunction is lifted in mid-2009, San Francisco is planning on installing nearly 1,000 new bike racks throughout the city. Make sure you get one where it will help you.

The SFBC (San Francisco Bike Coalition) has a handy little form you can fill out to request your bike rack. Just go to the Fix It! page and submit the quick form to let the city know. All they need is the address or business name and street. The city still needs additional requests to meet their goal, so keep them coming!

Mixtapes have always been important in Hip Hop.
However, in recent years they have moved from freestyles over rehashed beats with DJs screaming over the verses to virtually album quality music.

Now, MCs use the format to establish a buzz, intensify that buzz and in some cases pave the road to super stardom. Since Kid Cudi hooked up with Kanye’s G.O.O.D Music his buzz has been deafening with the release of his stoner anthem Day N’ Nite .

The Cleveland MC seeks to capitalize on this as well as prove his worth with the release of his new mixtape aptly titled Dat Kid From Cleveland.

The mixtape includes some tracks that you may have heard before such as, the sexual innuendo laced collaboration with Kanye and Common “I Poke Her Face” and the Transformers 2 theme song “Sky Might Fall”. There are also new tracks, skits and freestyles that you will hear for the first time. While the mixtape title shows a bit of modesty, soon Cudi will be known as more then just a kid from Cleveland.

Phil Orth Original Artwork

Phil Orth is a local artist transplant from Montana who has produced a remarkable body of work, largely oil paintings of...large size. He lives out in the country, but has been convinced to display his artwork in Minneapolis at Hair Police, my favorite hair joint.

Phil's inspirations include clowns, minotaurs, and ballerinas. None of that is true (so far as I know), but I've got some pics of the installation and I need some text to go along with it so rather than make an uneducated attempt at artistic comparison or description, I'm going to stick to lies and wild speculation.

Hmmmm that's kind of a cop-out isn't it? Okay, I think he's channelling some Salvador Dali, and if you're into channelling people, Dali is one of the best for abstract oils. I guess I'm not really familiar with anyone else in his league... Picasso? Or are they in different leagues? I mean Picasso's work is generally 2D and Dali's is 3D, right? Am I just making stuff up now? I knew this would happen despite my best intentions. Oh well...its my blog, right?

Anyway if you like what you see and want to get a better look or even one of your own, Phil can be reached via email at philsfineart@gmail.com, and Hair Police has directions on their site.
